I had some decisions to make at the church construction site today so I paid a visit. At one point, many of the workers were sitting outside together talking a break. The guy I needed to talk with was in that group so I walked outside and approached the men just in time to hear one of them say, "I have a funny story to tell you!" The guy then turns to see me coming with my "Friends Community Church" shirt on. I paused and waited for the story to be told. He said, "Actually, I don't think you would think it's funny. We pastors are no fun at all!
The things we find funny are often dependent on who we keep company with. This also holds true for the things we find acceptable and the things we find inappropriate. We are greatly influenced by those we surround ourselves with. Sometimes we don't have a choice but when you can choose, who do you choose to be influenced by?
I think the people closest to us should be people who encourage us in our faith. Those in the next sphere of influence should share our values. Next, we need to have some people who we can invest in and influence for the good. Momma told me, 'birds of a feather flock together and so do the pigs and swine.'
